Aftercare was, again, the emphasis was on accountability and commitment. It was scheduled; it was structured; I had meetings with a counselor there on a weekly basis. We had an aftercare group on a weekly basis.

And for the first six months, I was in a house with six-eight-ten of my peers from treatment. Then, I transitioned into independent living where I found a place, rented it, got a roommate. There was a lot of emphasis on being self-sufficient. You know, it wasn’t the kind of thing where we were given an allowance. It wasn’t the kind of thing where it was like, ‘Just show up, and everything’s fine.’

I’m supposed to be there, and I’m supposed to make a life for myself. I was expected to get a job. I was expected to pay my own bills in addition to being accountable to the program.

So it was as much about life skills as it was about treatment.

For me, it was a very good way to transition out of a twenty-four-seven treatment environment into what my life looks like today – having real responsibilities. Having things outside of treatment going on.
